The SEE, SALT and SOUND Visual Arts Exhibition
with a Maritime Theme
was held in September 2008
Sponsored by AGR-TRACS

visit the north east open studios website

The exhibition took place in tandem with NEOS (North East Open Studios), and was presented as the flagship event of the SEE, SALT + SOUND Festival, taking place at the same time, September 15th - 22nd 2008, in the Beach Ballroom and surrounding beach/prom/sea area.

Artists were invited to take part in this unique and exciting opportunity to show and sell their work. Particularly aimed at artists who may want extra exposure during NEOS or who do not have a NEOS venue, this event enabled artists to hire professional quality display space at a reasonable rate, in a central location, and was open to the public during the week.

Below are the links of some exhibiting artists
as listed in the catalogue.

Rowena Comrie www.scotlandart.com + www.axisweb.org
“ For many years I have been fascinated by the power and mystery of the sea. During this time, Aberdeen harbour and beach have provided me with many visual challenges. I have tried to capture in my paintings the power and drama, the quiet and the stormy moments, the seasons, the sunlight and the rain. In effect, I have documented the Aberdeen seascape for the last 18 years or so, painting many facets of the contrasting images of this ever changing and glorious force of nature.”

Susan Snyder
With Italian tools in hand, American artist Susan Snyder draws on her experiences and training in both Faenza, Italy and at home in Bloomington, Indiana to create original maiolica at her new residence in Aberdeen, Scotland. In creating this hand-painted maiolica pottery, she remains dedicated to Italian methods and colors. She finds inspiration in elaborate floral, fruit, celestial, animal, and geometric designs from 13th-18th century Italy.

Joyce Taylor www.joycetaylor.co.uk
Joyce paints mainly in oils and watercolour. Her work is inspired by the sea, especially the coastal villages of north-east Scotland and the Mediterranean coast of France. Her paintings hang in public and corporate collections in the UK and France and in private collections worldwide. Joyce also teaches Art and Design at Fraserburgh Academy and runs watercolour evening classes in Fraserburgh and weekend workshops at the Tolquhon Studio Workshop.

Amy Davenport
“While I enjoy all areas of photography, I especially love the creative aspects of the medium - in particular using camera techniques to bring new dimensions to everyday objects or places that can otherwise be overlooked. Whatever the subject matter I try to produce pictures that show scenes in a way which is not obvious, or perhaps even visible, to the naked eye.”

Marinescape www.marinescape.co.uk
Marinescape.co.uk is a collection of photographic images related to the sea and coast. Our limited edition prints, greetings cards and calendars reflect aspects of coastal life such as seascapes, boats and beaches, along with the little abstract details that add to the character of the Marinescape. Marinescape.co.uk is the combined work of Niall & Jacqueline Irvine, who also run the imaging and design company Perspectives.

Eilidh MacAskill
“I graduated from Gray's School of Art in 2006 and have since been investigating the natural patterns and processes found in our coastal environment. Through my work I hope to capture the essence of constant change to be found in our landscape and my use of salt as a highly fragile material highlights this. It is intended that the salt will partially fall off naturally to reflect the ephemeral qualities of nature.”

Fiona Swapp www.silversea-design.co.uk
“Throughout my life I have been drawn to the sea and it seems to keep me in a trance when I get there. I used to regularly go down to the shore around the bay in Torry to have family picnics. My mum and dad would find me staring into/at the water, watching as it laps against the rocks. To me this is one of my best thinking spaces. I find it one of the most passionate areas to make images of.

Pat Morrison
Pat Morrison moved to Aberdeenshire 3 years ago and finds inspiration in the dramatic moods and shifting sands of the Aberdeenshire coastline. “I remain in absolute awe of the forces of nature and I try to capture their emotional impact in my work.” says Morrison. She has exhibited in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Australia and currently at ‘Touched by Scotland’ and Orkney.

Liz Lees www.green-light-gallery.co.uk
Taking inspiration from daily life. Landscapes and people paintings in thick oils applied with a palette knife catching the movement and feelings of the moment. More pictures and line and wash drawings can be seen at Green Light Gallery on the A92 near Catterline.

Roselyne O'Neill www.roselyneoneillglassart.co.uk
Roselyne studied Art & Design in Aberdeen before taking time out of her career to raise a young family in Aberdeenshire. Roselyne has steadily been working on her career as an artist in recent years, and is successfully selling her work in local galleries. Working in various mediums including glass, acrylic & oils. Inspired by natural environment, historic sites & legend.

Douglas Armstrong www.bosker.co.uk
The sea’s influence is evident in most of my work. Having spent 25 years photographing the sea – attempting to capture its movement, drama and beauty, painting is merely a change of medium; I enjoy the additional challenges – capturing the accuracy of a scene with added contemporary impressions. Exhibiting artwork is a fairly recent experience; photography being mainly commission based for internet and print marketing materials.
